Scavenger: N50m? I can’t join Boko Haram

Scavenger: N50m? I can’t join Boko Haram

The Lagos State Government in its anti-child labour law warns kid-labourers to stay off the streets. But for 15-year-old Mustapha Abubakar, who came to Lagos from his native Katsina State last year, that law does not exist because he can neither speak nor write English language. Even the common man’s ‘pidgin English’ remained a hard try for him. Young Abubakar, one of the teeming scavengers in Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola’s Lagos State, was sent by his jobless parents to come and make money for them.
Playing the breadwinner
At a age most of his mates are in school, Abubakar, who came to Lagos with the help of his father’s friend called “Officer”, is playing his family’s breadwinner. He would have loved to be educated, but his poor father could not afford to send him to school. The young boy told Sunday Sun that the daily search for discarded iron and other commercial wastes at refuse dumps had not yielded the expected gains that will enable him support his family despite toiling from dawn to dusk. In an interview with our reporter at the Osolo dump site in Isolo, Lagos, he narrated how he had to struggle for virtually everything in life at a tender age. “There is no money now. My parents have no money to sponsor my education. My father married one wife and had four children. It is only one person that is going to school in our family.
Life as a scavenger
He said: “My father did not go to school and he does the same work that I do. But he does his own in Kastina State. He gathers irons and sells them to Arewa people. He usually buys many and loads them on trucks and distributes to the buyers. He could not send all of us to school because the money he makes is too small.”
Abubakar told Sunday Sun that on good days, he makes up to N500 profi,t part of which he saves through his guardian. Part of the savings is occasionally remitted to his parents. He was quick to add that business fortunes do change for good or bad.
He said: “In a day after going around Lagos, I could smile home with N1,500 and may be, at the end of the day, feed with N500 and then give my oga the remaining one to save for me. Every day, I give him N500 but if business is bad, I cannot give him because I have to eat.”
No love for the job
If you thought that the young boy loved his trade, you were wrong. “I don’t like the work, but I have no other choice. Sometimes the government would send policemen after us and when they catch you, they put you in the cell and you would pay N25,000 to bail yourself and the money you have made would just go like that. There are also the council people from the Lagos State government,” he said. For the young scavenger, who at a point told this reporter that, “oga, you speak as if you don’t know Lagos,” the state authorities have been unfair to people like him who are struggling to survive.
Abubakar said: “I don’t know why they are after us. They have arrested me before and my guardian paid for my bail. I did nothing wrong to warrant my arrest. My oga used part of my money to bring me out from the cell.”
Looking back, Abubakar recalled that his trip to Lagos was at the instance of his guardian who assured him that he would make good money. He said: “It is my oga that brought me to Lagos. He said that I would make money here if I came to Lagos and look for used irons to sell.”
In praise of employer
The lad, who trusts his master so much, described him as a man of integrity who would not swindle him of his little savings.
He said: “I don’t believe my oga can dupe me or seize my money because he is a rich man. It is not only me that he harbours under his care. Each morning, he would give us N1,500 each to get these irons and at the end of the day, we give him N2,000 and he would take his N1,500 and give us N500 each, which is our gain for the day. Sometimes if it was N3,000, he would take N2,000 and give me N1,000. From that amount, I would save N500.”
No time for frivolities
The scavenger, whose job entails picking and buying fairly used items across the city, explained that he does not engage in frivolities that could endanger his job and purse.
Abubakar said: “I don’t smoke because it is a waste of money, but I have friends that smoke and I don’t take beer. I don’t patronise prostitutes because they would finish all the money you have saved. That means you would not buy good things for your parents. That is why I don’t go there. Sometimes, the area boys would attack us and demand for money and if you don’t, they would beat you up.”
Encounter with women
Talking about his encounter with women, young Abubakar recounted his narrow escape from sexual abuse by a Togolese lady, who hawked food on his street in Katsina, and had the habit of seducing teenagers.
He said: “I was almost raped by a Togolese woman. She was older than me and she said that she liked me. One day, she asked me to come and shag her, but I told her that I would not, because it was bad. She promised me money if I would have sex with her but I bluntly refused.
“She had passed through our street and I called her to sell food to me. I bought food from her and when I gave her N50, she stayed and made passes at me. Then, I asked what her mission was and I told her to go, but she refused. Just then she touched me and robbed her body on mine. She begged me to have sex with her, but I ordered her out of our compound and she reluctantly stepped out.
Love for western education
Abubabar regretted his inability to go to school despite his love for western education.
He told Sunday Sun: “Honestly, I like to go to school but I don’t have money to fund my education. There is school in my place, but you need money to be admitted. One needs about N10,000 to secure admission into that school. If I spoke English very well, I would have told you all that made me stop schooling but basically, the major constraint was money.
“We are four children in my family but only one person is in school. Our father could not afford to send all of us to school. I am the family’s breadwinner and if I failed to send money, they would starve.
“I swear by Almighty God, if I had the opportunity to go to school and work after graduation, my family would no longer suffer. But if I could not get educated, I would continue with this job even though it is tough. If you were arrested, you would spend the money you saved on police bail. Sometimes they would accuse us of stealing from people’s compound all in the bid to extort money from us.
“I don’t engage myself in such evils because if I came here and stole, it automatically meant that I would not go back there again.”
I can’t join Boko Haram
Asked whether he would join the dreaded sect, Boko Haram, if offered huge money to cater for his family, Abubabar said that he preferred his life to evil money.
He said: “I don’t know about Boko Haram and I would never involve myself in it. Though I am a Muslim and we preach peace and love, nobody has introduced me to the sect and I would never be a part of it. I would not go because it is suicidal and I don’t want to die.
“Even if you give me N50 million now, I swear, I will never do such a thing. I love my parents but I would not sacrifice my life for them. For instance, if you carry the bomb, you will likely die and you will kill innocent people. It is not good at all and I cannot do it because I am not ready to die. Those who offer to be used to commit such evil have no sense at all.
“If the economy were stable, no hunger and education were free, people would not be do such things. Some of them got involved because their father could not cater for them and due to hunger, they joined to be able to fend for their families and they die in the process. But I cannot do such harm to my fellowman.”
Resolve to end illiteracy
Abubabar, who lives in a makeshift house popularly known as Batcha at the dump site, told Sunday Sun that if he came across any sponsor, he would devote his time and energy to western education.
He said: “My father would allow me to go to school if there was someone to help because he liked education but he had no money to send me to school. If he had money, he would have put me in school.
“If I make enough money or become rich tomorrow, I will ensure that everybody in my house goes to school. I am in Lagos today because in my state, you will not see this kind of job easily.”
Apparently counting the valuable time the interview had taken from his business, Abubakar suddenly begged to be excused and walked away.
“Let me go and make money. I will see you next time,” he said courteously and resumed his business.

Divorced for having triplets

Divorced for having triplets

woman vows: ‘I’ll never go back to my ex-husband or re-marry
•Her husband has offended God –Muslim clerics
•No, she disrespected my mother –Husband

From NAFISAT BELLO, Kaduna
She was delivered of a set of triplet on May 4, 2012, and barely two days after the two boys and a girl arrived, her husband, Kabiru Yusuf, divorced her for giving him three babies at a time. Before giving her the red card, Yusuf beat the mother of the triplet silly. Welcome to the world of 26-year-old Zainab Siraju.
When the news of Zainab’s ordeal first broke out about four months ago, not many residents of Kaduna, Kaduna State believed the story. All efforts to trace Zainab then, also proved abortive until August 30, 2012, when she returned to the hospital to enable the triplet undergo medical treatment. In an interview with Sunday Sun at the Yusuf Dantosho Memorial Hospital, where she was delivered of her babies, Zainab vowed that even if the father of her new babies made efforts to reconcile with her, she would never go back to a man who had no pity for her.
“Two days after I put to bed and was discharged from the hospital, I received the beating of my life from my husband for giving birth to triplet. The next thing was that he issued me a divorce letter,” she said.
The embattled woman, who could not hold back tears while narrating her ordeal, accused her run-away husband of lack of care. This was even as she alleged that she was beaten up by her brother in-law for daring to make her case known to the media. However, Zainab whose marriage to Kabiru Yusuf was her second, said she had no regret having the triplet despite the rejection by their father. Zainab, who also had three boys for her first husband, would not state why her first marriage crashed. She simply said she might have been chased her out of her first marriage by fate to have her three bundles of joy for Kabiru Yusuf.
Zainag said: “Actually I was married before, but the marriage didn’t last. I had three children there who are presently with their father. I believed I left my first husband because I was destined to have triplet for Kabiru and these are my first delivery for him.
“But, since he divorced me for having triplet, I moved in with my parents in Tudun Wada here in Kaduna, where assistance have come from good people, who have been assisting me with money, food and clothes.”
The mother of six also disclosed that a few days after her return from the hospital, her husband’s younger brother also attacked her for disclosing her ordeal to the public through the media.
Asked if she would go back to her husband, Zainab said: “I will not go back to him even if he begs me because of his uncaring attitude, which I am sure he can’t stop. He didn’t take care of me despite the fact that he works at Panteka.
“He was aware before my delivery that I was carrying triplet. He was adequately informed, because we did scan and it was revealed that I was pregnant with triplet.
“I am not disturbed that I gave birth to triplet. I use this opportunity to thank God for blessing me with the triplet and I pray to God to bless them for me.”
Zainab also ruled out the possibility of getting married again, saying that all that mattered to her was how to cater for her children.
Hear her: “I’m not planning to re-marry. I want to take proper care of my children, give them good training and a sound education. So, I will welcome any job opportunity that comes my way to enable me take care of my babies.”
Also speaking to Sunday Sun, the Matron-in-charge of Paediatrics at the Yusuf Dantosho Memorial Hospital, Mrs. Ajiyana Ramatu, said: “After her delivery, her husband came here, as if he was going to do something, but did nothing. So, I had to go round my colleagues to see if there was any material assistance that we could give her.
“In the process, some people gave some cash while others brought clothes. Two days later, when she was discharged from the hospital, she was divorced for giving birth to triplet.”
Clerics condemn divorce
Chief Imam of Al-Manar Academy, Central Mosque, Kaduna, Sheikh Muhammad Tukur Abdullah, described the development as saddening, saying Yusuf’s decision was informed by ignorance.
Abdullah said: “It is sad because when he slept with her, he did it with the aim of having a child. But, if Allah (SWA) is ready to bless you, He will not inform you. It will just come to you like a blessing, just the way it came to the father of triplet who beat his wife and divorced her.
“He never knew what kind of children they would be or what blessing the Almighty has for them and he (Yusuf) can never say that this was why He has blessed him with triplet and did not give others. But he went ahead to divorce her. Therefore, he did not offend the woman but his creator, Allah, because she is innocent.
“This is an act of ignorance, an animalistic act. Even when animals give birth to two or three or sometimes four, it is not on record that they complain. Take for instance, how birds hatch many eggs and yet they go around with them and feed them without complaining. The mother-bird does not kill or throw them away because she cannot feed them.
“Allah (SWA) has said ‘don’t try to kill your children because you are poor, I’m the giver of all things both the poor and the rich.’ So, what this man did was an act of ignorance.
“The Islamic rule in this is that if the father of this triplet is ignorant, after enlightening him and he now understands his wrong doings, Allah will forgive him because when one acts based on ignorance and he is enlightened later, Allah will forgive him because He is the ultimate forgiver.
“But, if after the knowledge and sound Islamic advice, he insists on his decision, Allah (SWA) will punish him, starting from this world till the hereafter.
“Because this is a gift from Allah. Look at three babies at a time when some families search for just a child for years but God didn’t give them. But look at one man trying to turn down the blessings of Allah. The man should fear Allah.
“My advice to the man and the woman is that the father of the triplet should repent and seek Allah’s forgiveness and pray to Allah to bless him so as to provide for the children. As for the woman, she should pray and be patient.”
Also speaking, the Imam, Main Central Mosque Barnawa, Kaduna, Muhammad Bello Awwal, said the man that divorced his wife because she had a set of triplet was playing god because Allah is the giver and taker of all things.
Awwal said: “First of all, that man does not believe in destiny because if he did, he would know that they were destined to have triplet and believing in destiny is central to the article of faith in Islam.”
But Kabir Yusuf, a welder, denied that he divorced his wife for giving birth to a set of triplet. Yusuf accused his former wife of conniving with the media to tarnish his image, saying that he divorced her because she was disrespectful to his mother.
Yusu said: “I was surprised when my attention was drawn to a programme on DITV and some newspapers that I divorced my wife because she gave birth to a set of triplet. This, to me, was an insult because God gave me those children. Why would I maltreat her? I divorced her four months ago but the media reported it as if it was yesterday. She lied against me.”
Yusuf recalled that on the day she was to give birth in May, his mother and younger sister took her to Dantsoho Hospital where she spent days before delivery.
He added: “She accused my mother and I of abandoning her but she forgot that on the day she went into labour, we took her to the hospital. During her stay in the hospital, none of her parents or relations came to stay with her.”
He explained that trouble started when his wife refused to stay with his mother as culture demanded, adding: “My mother asked her to come and stay with her so that she could take good care of her but she refused the offer for reasons best known to her. In fact, she went further to insult my mother.”
Yusuf denied that he beat his ex-wife.
He said: “God knows I did not beat her. Instead, she held my clothes and beat me. I couldn’t retaliate because of her condition. It doesn’t make any sense for one to divorce his wife because she gave birth to three babies at a time. In fact, since I sent her packing, I have been feeding her and the babies and I bought the medicine prescribed at the hospital. I have left everything to God.”

A few days after breaking the news that President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience Jonathan, was hospitalized in Germany, news has filtered out that Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke,is also receiving treatment in a London hospital for a serious medical condition.According to Sahara Reporters, ‘ Mrs. Madueke’s condition did not require immediate hospitalization, but described it as “potentially serious.” The source, who is a medical doctor, was only willing to divulge that the minister’s diagnosis is for a condition related to abnormal cell development in her body. The doctor declined to disclose if the diagnosis was a form of cancer, but said Mrs. Alison-Madueke’s condition “assumed a dire dimension recently.”

The medical source and another source close to the minister’s family told SaharaReporters that, prior to her recent hospitalization, Mrs. Alison-Madueke had made monthly medical trips to the UK. One source disclosed that she sometimes used private jets arranged by Kola Aluko, a business tycoon with whom she has business ties.

SaharaReporters gathered that the Petroleum minister owns a jet that is kept in trust for her by Walter Wagbatsoma, an oil marketer recently charged by the EFCC for involvement in oil subsidy scam.

SaharaReporters learnt that the minister hid the medical nature of her trips to London by telling friends and other government officials that she was going to see her children living in the UK. “For this trip three days ago, Madam said she was escorting her children who were returning to London to continue their schooling,” one of our sources said.

One source revealed that the minister flew to London few days after accompanying Mr. Jonathan on an official trip to Anambra State. Even though the minister is married, there have been persistent speculations linking her to a romantic relationship with President Jonathan.

SaharaReporters learnt that the president’s ailing wife had complained to her close friends that Mrs. Alison-Madueke had caused her condition because the oil minister wants to take her place at all cost.

Meanwhile, a source told SaharaReporters that Mrs. Jonathan’s condition has stabilized in Germany where she is being treated for food poisoning. The source said the First Lady came down with food poisoning in Dubai where she had gone on a secret mission to explore undergoing some procedure.

The nature of the procedure remains a mystery, but a source at the Presidency said he knew that Mrs. Jonathan close friend, Bola Shagaya, had been persuading her to see a Lebanon-based cosmetic surgeon.

The source added that the First Lady was interested in enhancing her looks.

The Presidency remains officially silent regarding the nature of Mrs. Jonathan’s current condition in a hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany. Instead, Presidency sources have been releasing snippets of various versions of her condition to different news outlets.

A source in Abuja said she suspected that Mrs. Jonathan might have undergone a procedure in Dubai from which she got an infection.
